Old Trees
I was in California this past weekend with my husband for a brief getaway at Asilomar, on Monterey Bay. Saturday afternoon we took a drive through Carmel by the Sea and beyond, to Carmel Highlands, and stopped at the Highlands Inn to take in the view. The coastline was gray with rain and obscured, but maybe more beautiful for it. These two old trees caught my eye. They made me think of an old couple, a pair who have seen many years together, stood firm in the winds and ravages of time, and grown tall and strong beside each other. The one is broad and straight and very serious, and the other has sent out her branches like feelers all around. Their roots must have become so intertwined, that if one were to fall, the other surely would lose it's footing.
