The decisive moment
There is an intangible thing that makes an image come to life called the "decisive moment," a term coined by photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson. The decisive moment refers to capturing an event that is ephemeral and spontaneous, where the image represents the essence of the event itself. Composition is part of it, expression is part of it. But the moment, so brief, is what defines it.
I photographed a holiday party for families over the weekend, a cowboy themed event full of horses, crafts, projects, food, and more horses. Santa made a grand entrance chauffeured by the Sheriff's office with lights flashing. I am always searching, searching for that moment.
